When the city of Weir incorporated in the fall of 1988, the Weir Volunteer Fire
Department was formed. The young fire department was made up of volunteers from the local area that started out with literally a shovel, a bucket and a lot of heart.
Our first truck was an old 1952 Air Force fire truck that had to be rebuilt from the ground up. We were proud of Big Red the day we finished painting it (it was banana yellow before) and putting it into service. We worked on Big Red in the evenings and weekends is local garages and farm shops.
The first fire station was an old automotive garage here in the city of Weir, located near the Weir Store. The old garage was small and the fire fighters had to move the trucks out of the bays to make room for a meeting. But at least we had a home. Our fledgling fire department was growing, and we were proud of what we had accomplished in a few short years. With the help of local fire departments and businesses we were able to outfit our guys in a rag tag assortment of used bunker gear. Our truck fleet was slowly growing also. We were able to add several "newer" used trucks to our fleet and now we could handle grass fires and structure fires more efficiently.
Weir was growing and so was our fire department. Some of the trucks had to be parked at the homes of the members because there was not enough room in the station to park all of the trucks. We needed all of the trucks to be in one central location, out of the weather and we needed a place to train. So, we started on the fire station we have now. We disassembled a building in Austin and moved it here to Weir. Many, many hours of manpower, by dedicated members, went into preparing the site and putting up the building. The result was the station that houses the Weir Volunteer Fire Department today on FM 1105 just north of Weir. Through the many fundraisers and and lots of community support, we were able to payoff our building almost before we had it completed.
We are a group that volunteers because there is a need in our community. We thank the community of Weir for their support at all of our fundraisers throughout the years. We still have a lot to accomplish. Our training is expensive and takes us away from our families and cuts into our leisure time.
The Weir Volunteer Fire Department has nine trucks which respond to all MVA's, fires, and medical assist calls within the bounds of our fire district. Our fire district runs north to the Walburg community, east to the Granger fire district, and south to Highway 29 taking in the Jonah community. Georgetown meets us at the Berry Creek Bridge to the west.
WE VOLUNTEER BECAUSE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!!
