In July 2008, WVFD began its new Resident Firefighter Program. The program was established to help staff our station as our call volume continues to increase. We have experienced an increase incall volume of about 25% per year since 2007. Unfortunately, our budget is not growing at as fast of a pace, which means we cannot hire paid staff.
The program planning began in September of 2007 and included remodeling of Station 1 to accomodate the Resident Firefighters. 6 candidates were appointed to the program that began on July 7, 2008.
Resident Firefighters work a 24-on/48-off schedule.
In return, Resident Firefighters live at the station rent-free
and are provided any training and certification that can be afforded
to them. Additionally, they receive free utilities, furniture,
satellite television, computers and wi-fi.
